Theme: Luke 21:25-36

November 25, 2009

I am going apocalyptic this week for the First Sunday of Advent.  These are the thoughts I have so far for this week’s sermon*:

Theme (What is God doing in the text?): God’s grace interrupts our lives in unexpected ways.

Need (What is the human need reflected in the text?): Be alert for Jesus’ presence in the world now.

Image (What is the dominant image for the sermon?): Awake vs. asleep.

Mission (To what action is the text leading us?): Focus on people and relationships, not details.

*These categories are adapted from Paul Scott Wilson’s The Four Pages of the Sermon (Nashville: Abingdon, 1999).
