Theme: Mark 12:38-44

November 5, 2009

I am pretty sure I’ll be writing a narrative sermon this week.  Even though the entire sermon will be an imaginative story, it will be directly connected to the theme and other elements below.  These are the thoughts I have so far for this week’s sermon*:

Theme (What is God doing in the text?): Jesus Christ lives sacrificially for the sake of the world.

Need (What is the human need reflected in the text?): To get outside of ourselves and live sacrificially in the manner of Jesus.

Image (What is the dominant image for the sermon?): Gift or sacrifice.

Mission (To what action is the text leading us?): Trust God enough to share ourselves completely.

The narrative will be based on the idea that the widow’s gift is a parable about or analogy for Jesus and his act of complete self-emptying.

*These categories are adapted from Paul Scott Wilson’s The Four Pages of the Sermon (Nashville: Abingdon, 1999).
