Theme: Isaiah 25:6-9

October 28, 2009

This will be a short All Saints Day sermon based on a specific image of a woman who provided the gift of a garden and flowers for her neighbors.  These are the thoughts I have so far for this week’s sermon*:

Theme (What is God doing in the text?): God gives us a vision of ultimate salvation.

Need (What is the human need reflected in the text?): We need to have hope for the future.

Image (What is the dominant image for the sermon?): A garden.

Mission (To what action is the text leading us?): To be living examples of hope.

I will work with the idea of faith as a verb.  It is not simply belief, but a faithful life is lived out of a deep hope that comes from God.

*These categories are adapted from Paul Scott Wilson’s The Four Pages of the Sermon (Nashville: Abingdon, 1999).
