Theme: Mark 10:46-52

October 21, 2009

I am still headed toward contrasting living life “alongside the way” and “on the way.”  These are the thoughts I have so far for this week’s sermon*:

Theme (What is God doing in the text?): God gives us the vision (spiritual sight, wisdom) to see the way.

Need (What is the human need reflected in the text?): We need to be on the way.

Image (What is the dominant image for the sermon?): Traveling, journey or path.

Mission (To what action is the text leading us?): To make a conscious decision to be on the journey with Jesus rather than simply observing him as he passes by.

As usual, I am considering concrete examples that differentiate following from sitting alongside.  What are some decisions in our life that require us to choose between “on” and “alongside”?

*These categories are adapted from Paul Scott Wilson’s The Four Pages of the Sermon (Nashville: Abingdon, 1999).
