Potential Theme: Mark 9:38-50

September 24, 2009

I have selected the middle section (verses 42-48) for the heart of the sermon, though I am still playing around with the idea of using the salt image from 49-50.  The September 22, 2009 edition of The Christian Century has a good piece in Living by the Word (page 20) on being “salted with fire.”  These are the thoughts I have so far for this week’s sermon*:

Theme (What is God doing in the text?): God provides us a kingdom of surpassing value.

Need (What is the human need reflected in the text?): The ability to reject the things that are merely important in order to lay hold of the things that are of utmost importance.

Image (What is the dominant image for the sermon?): Choice/choosing.

Mission (To what action is the text leading us?): Discerning the difference between kingdom values and worldly values.

I am still eager to hear from those of you who will be preaching on salt.  What direction will you take.  What other images are present in the text?

*These categories are adapted from Paul Scott Wilson’s The Four Pages of the Sermon (Nashville: Abingdon, 1999).
