Potential Theme: 2 Samuel 11:26-12:13a

July 29, 2009

These are the thoughts I have so far for this week’s sermon*:

Theme (What is God doing in the text?): God sees and names evil.

Need (What is the human need reflected in the text?): We need to accept God’s judgment and moral authority without quibbling or making excuses.

Image (What is the dominant image for the sermon?): Light that exposes the shadows.

Mission (To what action is the text leading us?): To align our own lives and behavior with God’s judgment.

How can this theme and need be presented in a way that isn’t simply moralizing?  The other possibility is to present the text in a way that encourages us to speak God’s truth to the world.  It is dangerous, however, to set ourselves up as moral arbiters.  What do you think?
