Potential Theme: 2 Samuel 11:1-15

July 22, 2009

These are the thoughts I have so far for this week’s sermon*:

Theme (What is God doing in the text?): This is a really tough one since God is not mentioned and seems absent.  Perhaps God is living through Uriah’s faithfulness or is allowing David to choose his own path, even though it will lead to disaster.

Need (What is the human need reflected in the text?): We need to know how to make life-giving, life-honoring choices.

Image (What is the dominant image for the sermon?): Earthen vessels.

Mission (To what action is the text leading us?): Interrupt our sinful choices before they spiral out of control.

How do you see God acting in this story?  Is God here at all?  How can this sermon be more than just a warning “do not sin”?

*These categories are adapted from Paul Scott Wilson’s The Four Pages of the Sermon (Nashville: Abingdon, 1999).
