Potential Theme: 2 Samuel 1:1, 17-27

June 24, 2009

These are the thoughts I have so far for this week’s sermon*:

Theme (What is God doing in the text?): God’s grace defines us as who we are at our best.

Need (What is the human need reflected in the text?): We need to overcome our failures and the fear of failure.

Image (What is the dominant image for the sermon?): A person whose public image is defined by one awful moment of failure even though the rest of that person’s life has been well lived.

Mission (To what action is the text leading us?): Allow the promise of God’s forgiveness to sink in so that you can embrace the good for which God has created you.

God is not explicitly mentioned, so what do you see God doing in the text?  Is there a theme around the image of grief that you might use?

*These categories are adapted from Paul Scott Wilson’s The Four Pages of the Sermon (Nashville: Abingdon, 1999).
