Potential Theme: 1 Samuel 17

June 17, 2009

These are the thoughts I have so far for this week’s sermon*:

Theme (What is God doing in the text?): God provides our only sure hope.

Need (What is the human need reflected in the text?): Living out our call in whole, healthy ways is a task far too big for us.

Image (What is the dominant image for the sermon?): A hopeless situation–perhaps a difficult medical diagnosis or a personal economic crisis.

Mission (To what action is the text leading us?): Simply show up; do what you can do, and be at peace, knowing the rest is in God’s hands.

What are your plans?  What do you see God doing in the text?  Are there any dominant images you may use in the sermon?

*These categories are adapted from Paul Scott Wilson’s The Four Pages of the Sermon (Nashville: Abingdon, 1999).
