Potential Theme: 1 Samuel 15:34-16:13

June 10, 2009

I may use the following ideas to develop this week’s sermon*:

Theme (What is God doing in the text?): God is providing for the future of the people.

Need (What is the human need reflected in the text?): Our best efforts alone are not enough to reach the future God has in store for us.

Image (What is the dominant image for the sermon?): Someone who is deemed forgotten or unimportant.

Mission (To what action is the text leading us?): Seek God’s providence in unexpected faces and places.

What do you see?  What is God’s primary purpose for action in the text?  Are there any dominant images you may use in the sermon?

*These categories are adapted from Paul Scott Wilson’s The Four Pages of the Sermon (Nashville: Abingdon, 1999).

I am thinking about seeing – human-seeing and God-seeing. It is not so much what is seen but how we see. We can look at the same same thing and each see something different. I think this corresponds to exterior seeing and interior seeing, seeing with physical eyes or the eyes of the heart.

I am writing prayers of the faithful for this week and am also considering this point, going a little further to consider how we look at ourselves and our own calling. . . feeling unworthy because we don’t fit the ‘look’ of ‘feel’ of a servant of the King.
